Composers Notes

Sometime around late 2000/early 2001 I was asked to write this piece. The idea was that I'd compose a lengthy, ongoing track to a rough sequence of events for a short film. Kevin Hiley told me that after I'd finished it, the video would be essentially filmed to the music. In fact, what with there being no dialogue or other sound in the film, it would be in the foreground of the film.

I don't want to waffle on too much about this piece, but after listening to it now, isn't it quite sad and hilarious that after going to the lengths of composing over 6 minutes of ongoing tuneage, I presented it to Kev as a recorded MIDI with a bit of reverb slapped on it? Keff McCulloch, eat your heart out... soon.

But you know, it still works with the (excellent) film... almost. My only concern is that this admittedly very dated music could hamper it in the near future. I'd hate to think that the music for Help Wanted would prevent it from winning any further awards. Hmm... it's a noggin-knocker, that 'un.

The major problem I have with this track is that it isn't as scary as it really should be. Kevin did some great things with it on the film at the end (which work marvellously), but because of the cheesy bass and some lead melodies.. I dunno, it distracts doesn't it?

If you want to hear how this music might've sounded, check out In Pursuit - it was a kind of demo for it.

Stay tuned on this one, kids.
